Making plans for NYE? Read this story – updated today with new events. Read on for carnivals, pop-ups, markets, art classes and more in Huskisson and our charming seaside villages.
Jervis Bay Flyover road works were paused from Saturday 21 December until Monday 6 January, which is helping with the holiday traffic. Boom gates are operating until Sunday 2 February between 9am and 5pm to keep the traffic flowing. Expect to wait some time still, as we are anticipating around 200,000 visitors to the area this holiday season, and please be kind to each other.
Patrolled beaches are so important when swimming this summer, especially with young family members or inexperienced swimmers. Shoalhaven Council has published a handy list of patrolled beaches.
Plans to re-poen Vincentia Golf Club on 1 January are afoot, with resounding community support. Access to pro shop, toilets and bbq facilities will bring life back to the venue. We will keep you informed of further amenities as they come online.
Husky Carnival
We love this annual fixture in the sports fields of Husky, with everything you love including exciting rides, carnival food, a fantastic atmosphere, live music from local talent, and this year there will be two fireworks nights not on NYE.
The Husky Carnival will have its first Fireworks Night on 4 January and second on 26 January, both starting at 9pm.
You can pre-purchase tickets online, or from the on-site box office. If you are attending on Sunday 12 January, you will only be able to buy tickets on-site as all proceeds will go to the Lions Club on that day.
Bands on the Bay
Starts today at the Vincentia Sailing Club on Barfleur Beach, Bands on the Bay hosted by Jervis Bay Brewing Co is on again. A variety of food trucks will provide sustenance, while you get comfy on the lawn and enjoy music from local favourites including Blue Mallee (today!), George Bishop and All The Fuss. This pop-up wraps on 5 January, you can see the full program of music and food trucks online.
Summer Sessions
More live music and great atmosphere will be found at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum Summer Sessions in January. Thursday afternoons will come alive around the pond from 3pm-7pm with a fundraising bar, food trucks, live music and the museum open late (entry fee applies for the museum). The festivities commence on Thursday 2 January with music from local favourites, Chocolate Dogs and George Bishop, with food by Nomad Kitchen & BBQ. There will be two more events, on Thursday 9 and 16 January, so pop them in your calendar now!
Markets!
Start your new year on the freshest footing with a visit to the weekly Thursday Farmers Markets in Nowra, at Harry Sawkins Park from 2pm-5pm and in Berry at the Bowling Club
Head to your market this Thurday 2 January. Stock up on fresh food, artisanal products, have a snack from a food van, meet the makers, wander around with your fur friend and take home a bounty of goodies knowing you are supporting local growers and makers and keeping your footprint small.
Saturday 4 January is a great market day, too. Start with the Milton Village Showground Market – always full of wonderful stalls including food, clothing, homewares, pet products, arts and crafts – on from 9.30am-3.30pm. Then head to the Twilight Markets at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, around the pond and gardens from 3pm-7pm. Make time to enjoy the recently upgraded Mangrove Walk that starts out behind the museum and winds along through the mangroves out to a viewing platform at Currambene Creek.
Cockatoo For Our Future
Purchase a Gang Gang cockatoo and help raise funds for Keep Jervis Bay Unspoilt, a vital action group that tackles inappropriate development in our region. These delightful ornaments are hand-felted by artisans in Nepal and sold at Ethik – the good story shop on Owen Street Huskisson, who give $12 of the $20 price to the fundraiser. This is the second year that Ethik has sold these little guys, and surprisingly there are still some available! They sold out fast last year, so please pop in to the shop or buy one (or a flock) online soon.
Learn Pen and Watercolour
Spend Saturday 28 December in an artist’s garden in Jervis Bay learning the soothing art of pen and watercolour painting, with expert tutor/artist Jenny McIntosh, $200/$180. Create your own coastal masterpiece from a photo (bring one with you, along with your lunch), and learn new skills. Perfect for all abilities, tickets are still available online. Sign up to Jenny’s newsletter to find out about her other art classes.
Learn Silver Jewellery
Make your own gorgeous silver stacking ring with Appleye Studio in Berry, in the Co.Lab shop on the main street, $130 on this Sunday 29 December from 1pm-3pm. These workshops are highly rated, and this one is suitable for ages 12+ so it makes a perfect parent/child activity. Tickets are limited, so hop online to book or browse their other workshops for something else, like a chunky ring or a bangle. Read our story about Co.Lab here.
