Plastic-free July

Get ready for Plastic Free July, Jervis Bay! From Tuesday, the Australian-based registered charity is encouraging everyone across the globe to make a pledge to refuse single-use plastics. After the astounding amount of plastics washed up on our usually pristine beaches after recent storms – and the community clean-up effort encouraged by Our Future Shoalhaven – it’s never been a better time to reconsider our dependence on cling wrap, packaged fruit and vegetables, water bottles, and so much more. Check out their website for great ideas about how to minimise (or avoid) single-use plastics every day.

Vincentia Golf Club Vote

Check your membership to make sure it’s current if you want to vote in the upcoming proposal to deamalgamate the Vincentia club from the St Georges Basin club. Membership forms are available on the website for new members who will need to go into the St Georges Basin venue to complete their membership, and renewals can be completed online but you will need to go in to collect a new card. For $8.50, secure your right to vote on the future of this community resource. For more information on the community bid, check out Jervis Bay Community & Sports Club.

Sunday Sessions

We love our live music here at Jervis Bay Weekend Magazine. Here’s the best of who’s playing this Sunday, so you can get your groove on to wrap up your weekend.

Jervis Bay Brewing Co: The fabulous Ness Quinn is on from 3pm, in the beer garden in the Huskisson industrial zone. Singer/songwriter Ness is a local favourite with lush vocals and beautiful lyrics.

Flamin Galah: One of Australia’s most exciting up-and-coming female singer/songwriters is Felicity Dowd, who will be performing songs such as her new single, Built Like Us, with a great folk/country vibe. From 3pm at the brew-pub in the Huskisson industrial zone.

Bannisters Pavilion Roof Top: Sundowner takes on a whole new meaning at this Mollymook establishment, which offers live music from 5pm Sundays. This Sunday it’s Jason Norris, with acoustic guitar and gentle vocals.

Cupitt’s Estate: Head down to the lush surrounds of this estate in Ulladulla overlooking Burrill Lake and the Budawang Ranges for Tommy Disco who is bringing the good vibes from 12.30pm with a feel-good mix of disco, soul, Motown and funk. Spend your afternoon in the Wine Garden with delicious pizzas and share plates.

Plan Ahead – Get Out Your Diary!

Owl Talk

The most surprising encounter this magazine had with an owl was outside the ice cream shop in Huskisson a couple of Christmases ago. We wondered why a small group of people were staring up into the tree – there was a masked owl, peeking out from behind the bottlebrushes, right there on the main street of Husky!

Satisfy your inner citizen scientist and learn more about these exceptional creatures at a talk, ‘Owls and Forests’ by Dr Beth Mott, Threatened Species Officer, NSW Department of Planning and Environment. Beth will present a talk on our forests and the night-life within – particularly the owls, 6pm to 7pm, 24 July (aligned with World Nature Conservation Day, 26th July). All welcome, The Hub, shop 14 Burton Street Shopping Village, Vincentia.

Bonsai Class

Immerse yourself in the ancient art of bonsai at a two-day workshop with local bonsai master, Mason Keane of Bonsai on the Bay. Mason is offering weekend workshops in July and August, for $500pp or bring a friend for $50 off each. Mason will help you to select the best plant stock from his extensive nursery, along with all the tools, wires, pots and soil you need. The weekend includes lunches, refreshments and winding down with a drink by the fire after the day’s work is done. There’s not much about bonsai that Mason doesn’t know, these workshops are highly recommended.

Arts Muster

Enjoy a creative weekend with Arts Muster this August, and sign up for one of 10 workshops in a range of art and craft techniques.
