Science Week in Jervis Bay covers birds, bees, whales, oysters and ocean sounds

Before we recap the highlights of Science Week, a quick note on the roadworks at the corner of Jervis Bay Road and the Princes Highway.

On Monday 26, Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29 August 2024 only, between 9pm and 5am, Jervis Bay Road will be closed between the Princes Highway and Woollamia Road. Access to Mortimer Road and Gardner Road will be maintained for residents and emergency services. Take the Island Point Road turnoff to the Princes Hwy (the one with the roundabout), and follow other detour signs in place on those dates. Don’t forget to add extra time to your journey!

To the seal spotted on Callala Beach this week, we hope you are enjoying your visit and that the humans are respecting your personal space!

Paella at the Museum

There’s another treat on the cards at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum this Friday 16 August for Science Week. A seafood paella and bar will pop up in the museum grounds at 5pm for Eats Beats and Museum Up Late. Rug up and enjoy free live music from the Jackee B Trio, take advantage of free museum entry till 7pm.

Whale talk in VR

Also at the Museum, a third science talk will take place on Saturday 17 August at 1.30pm focusing on whales, with a Virtual Reality element to make it extra interesting. Dr Emily Yap, Katharina Peters and Guy Freer from Uni of Wollongong will bring together First Nations cultural knowledge and whale research in Whale Songlines. This talk, as well as the earlier talks on Bees and Birds, are included with museum entry $12.50/$10/u16 free.

Art and Science

Draw while you survey an ecological zone in the landscape around the Bundanon Homestead with artist in residence Madison Kelly, for Science Week. Record movement and the passage of time as the morning ticks along, from 10am on Sunday 18 August, $54/$45 includes all the materials you need. Book online.

A Play from Sydney Festival

On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. This award-winning play, The Visitors, by Muruwari playwright Jane Harrison directed by one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Quandamooka man Wesley Enoch, is on at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre as part of a national tour. Tickets are $75/$45 for Tuesday night 20 August from 8pm. Visitors leave. Right?

You Spin Me

Get your vinyl fix at this Saturday’s Record Fair at Jervis Bay Brewing Co, from midday till 5pm on 17 August in the Husky industrial zone. This pop-up record fair offers thousands of new, old, collectable and obscure vinyl records for you to crate dig.

Milky Way Time

The best time to see this spectacular celestial sweep across the night sky is in winter, so there isn’t much time left this year to take advantage of the view plus the earlier start time (ie after sunset) for a stargazing experience, $85. Hop online to pick a date with the Milky Way and Jervis Bay Stargazing team Dimitri and Caroline.

Markets

Saturday 17 August is the Tomerong Markets at the School of Arts, a sweet village markets with loads of handmade products, starts at 8am.

Have you made the Thursday weekly farmers markets part of your habit yet? The best way to stock up on fresh, wholesome food for the weekend, Berry Farmers Market at the Bowlo from 2-5pm and Nowra Farmers Market in Harry Sawkins Park from 2-5pm.

Last chance

A few spots are still available for Arts Muster workshops – if you fancy creating a Coiled Basket, some Wearable Felt or try your hand at Experimental Knitting, there’s still a few days left to book.

If you can’t make it to a class, put Sunday 25 August in your diary for the Artisans Markets hosted by Arts Muster at the Husky Hall, 10-3. There will be more than 20 stalls of handmade items, arts and crafts for sale directly from the makers.

Plan Ahead

Bud’s X Old Salt South American BBQ night on Tuesday 27 August has a few tables remaining – this wood-fired feast with matching spicy music and cocktails promises to be a fiesta to remember, from $85 pp.

Have lunch with a whale scientist at Bannisters on Friday 30 August, $95. Dr Vanessa Pirotta published a fabulous book earlier this year, The Humpack Highway. We can’t wait to hear about her adventures in person at this long-table event.

Shoalhaven First Nations Film Festival is coming up on 20-22 September and tickets are selling fast for this inaugural event, which includes an opening night celebration at the Husky Hall.

Get wild at Bundanon’s queer weekend of art, talks, bush foraging and a disco, 7-8 September. Check out the program online, you can book for a whole weekend experience or choose from individual events.
