FRIDAY 6 MARCH: There is a unique rhythm to a Jervis Bay weekend, especially when the calendar aligns to offer a little bit of everything. Whether you are chasing the local buzz of a twilight market by the pond, the serene stillness of an immersive art installation, or the adrenaline of a three-day coastline swim, this week’s lineup celebrates the very best of our coastal community.

Things to Do Right Now

Commemorate International Women’s Day: Every year, 8 March is a day to reflect on the lives of women across the world, from celebrations of their achievements to discussions about urgent issues on safety and wellbeing.

Book tonight before 5pm to attend a literary event tomorrow, starting at 10am at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, featuring six inspirational women authors. Aunty Barb Nicholson is among the speakers, someone who has been inspirational in this writer’s life from university days in the early 90s, and today as her Ngana Barangarai (Black Wallaby) Project publishes anthologies of writing by First Nations inmates.

Women Speak is on at the Berry School of Arts on Sunday 7 March, starting at 2pm and featuring seven women discussing what barriers remain to further improvements in women’s lives. Entry is by donation at the door and includes afternoon tea.

Visit an Art Installation in Erowal Bay: Dr Natalie McDonagh is hosting a live arts experience with original music at her studio in Erowal Bay, with guests invited to move through the installation to experience five moments of reflection and exploration. We paid a visit yesterday and relished the chance to pause in an intimate setting holding infinite possibilities, perfectly complemented with a soundtrack that felt like a feather suspended on a breath of air. On this Friday and Saturday and next Thursday-Saturday, rsvp to receive the full details of how to visit, natalie@mcdonaghdesign.com.

Taste Nature at a New Café in the Bush at Woollamia: There’s a new café open to the public at the Bay & Bush nature retreat, headed up by chef Alexia Williams. It’s the perfect spot for brunch Thursday to Sunday, or a refreshment after a morning wellness session in the new studio, The Nest. Open from 8.30am till 1pm, the menu features fresh seasonal ingredients and highlights flavours from the hives located on the 27-acre property. From light snacks to heartier choices like the slow cooked lamb, the health-leaning menu is a perfect complement to the values of this beautiful bushland retreat.

Donate to ‘The Rock’ First Nations Film: Help our local Shoalhaven First Nations Film Festival fund a new film into production. So far, donations have reached just over a third of the $12,000 target, to assist in the production of a short film based on an original story retold by Luke McLeod-Ebsworth, a young Koori dancer and storyteller. Filming is set to commence on 30 March. Stay tuned for updates.

Love Local Markets Amplified: Two of Huskisson’s best markets are on this weekend thanks to a quirk in the calendar. On Saturday 7 March, enjoy an evening by the pond as the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum hosts the Twilight Markets complete with live music, the Whaler’s Bar and food trucks as well as stalls offering all kinds of wares. From 3pm-7pm. Then on Sunday, the Huskisson Markets will sprout in White Sands Park from 8am, with around 50 stalls to browse, right along the foreshore, till 2pm.

The Callala community markets are also on this Saturday morning from 8am-1pm, at the Emmett Street Community Centre.

Further south, Sunday sees the Ulladulla Wharf Markets set up around the picturesque working harbour, in support of the local Marine Rescue. Over in Kangaroo Valley, it’s the KV Farmers Markets behind the Friendly Inn from 9am, the perfect way to stock up on fresh seasonal produce from local growers and providores.

Enjoy Free Entry at Bundanon: The opening weekend of Sky, Earth Water by Rosalie Gascoigne exploring her deep connection to the material landscape, alongside significant new commissions by leading First Nations artists Lorraine Connelly-Northey, Janet Fieldhouse and Glenda Nicholls is on at the Bundanon Art Museum in Illaroo (about an hour’s drive from Huskisson). There will be live music, artist talks, and free entry to the museum across the weekend, and you can rsvp online. Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March.

Support Live Music: We are huge fans of the local venues up and down the South Coast who give an audience – and an income – to independent musicians. Our top picks for this weekend include a brand-new musical offering at Old Salt Distillery in South Nowra, which is starting live music on Saturday afternoons, starting with Laine Wolfe, billed as “seasoned one-woman band, weaving voice, guitar and a well-worn suitcase drum into rich and lively rhythmic performances”. Old Salt’s bar and restaurant will be open every Friday in March from 12pm to 9pm, and most Saturdays from 12pm to 4pm, check their trading hours page to be sure before you visit.

On Sunday 8 March from 12:30pm, Dave Newman will be playing his charming, lounge-style versions of classic acoustic hits at Cupitt’s Estate in Ulladulla, creating the perfect Sunday afternoon vibe. Also on Sunday, Blessie Pica’s soulful vocals, mixing R&B, pop and acoustic favourites will bring a warm feeling to your Sunday afternoon, from 3pm at the Flamin Galah brew-pub in the Woollamia industrial estate. Arrive at 3pm to take advantage of happy hour and stay till 6pm to feel the full rich, expressiveness of Blessie’s performance.
