It’s already the October Long Weekend here in Jervis Bay, and the weather is sensational. As you prepare to “spring forward” for Daylight Savings time, whip out your diary and fill it up with these amazing things to do. For this week’s delicious dining ideas, see this story from our Hospitality Editor, Narrell.

Yila Healing Trail Festival

The inaugural festival, Yila Healing Trail starts on 11 October with a corroboree and continues for 10 days with a full program of events centred on cultural knowledge sharing, wellness practices and connection to nature led by First Nations Elders, Traditional Custodians and local facilitators. See the full program of free and paid events, and take part in some wonderful experiences including art and craft, walking on Country, bush tucker, land care and gardening, star gazing, music and dance, and more.

Visual Arts in the Valley

Kangaroo Valley’s celebration of local artists is on this weekend, with an opening event on Friday 4 October at 6.30pm in the hall. The Arts in the Valley event includes an exhibition from Australian Galleries who have displayed works by significant Australian artists who are usually only shown in Sydney or Melbourne galleries. All works on display will be available for sale. The Kangaroo Valley Art Trail is also on, a great opportunity to visit the working studios of 10 Local Kangaroo Valley Artists.

Currarong Art Trail

For those who love a peak inside a working artist’s studio, this Saturday is the monthly Currarong Art Trail, an easy walk around the seaside village, from 10-2pm. See their website for a map and which studios are open.

Artist Talk at Maritime Museum

Join contemporary award-winning sculptor, Akira Kamada for a special artist talk about his current exhibition at the Jervis Bay Maritime Museumthe land: seeking coexistence. Hear about the intention, process and challenges behind the works. Wednesday 9 October 10:30am followed by morning tea, $7/$5

Markets on Sunny Days

There are a few excellent markets to choose from this weekend, and we know how to put on a sensational market here on the South Coast – the weather looks fantastic and there’s plenty to feed and entertain the kids, too.

Start in Milton with the Milton Village Showgrounds Markets from 9.30am on Saturday 5 October. Sample some gin, pick up fresh produce for your weekend, and browse clothing, homewares and arts and crafts.

Make your way back to Jervis Bay Maritime Museum for the Twilight Markets, starting at 3pm on Saturday. While you’re there, wander along the recently refurbished timber boardwalk through the mangroves and enjoy the water birds who make their home around the pond.

Sunday morning it’s Culburra Beach markets, from 8am on Fred Evans Lane. This is always a popular event with locals and visitors, including great breakfast options.

Sunday Sessions

Live music lovers, head to Jervis Bay Brewing Co this Sunday from 4pm to enjoy the chill vibe from George Bishop and his reggae-style music, in the Huskisson industrial zone. Congratulations to the brewery on their recent achievement of “B-Corp” status, which means they are a business which is about much more than making money – they care for the planet, people and community.

The sounds of Soul Tonic will soothe your Sunday at Cupitt’s Estate in Ulladulla from 12.30pm, so stretch out on the lawn, book a table for lunch or enjoy a wine tasting.

If a rooftop sunset with live music is to your taste, try Bannisters Pavilion Rooftop East where Alex Clark will be creating the vibe.

Plan ahead

Sound Bathing: Join a Women’s Healing Sound Bath, 20 October Huskisson Community Centre, 3-4pm, $30. Bathe in the relaxing vibrations from chimes, singing bowls and more, followed by herbal tea, with practitioner Jen Freeman from Jervis Bay Healing Sounds.

Wood-fired pizza: Martins Ridge Farm is now hosting wood-fired pizza Sundays, $65pp, at their beautiful property in Conjola, where they produce sustainably-farmed pork and charcuterie products. They are also taking pre-orders for Christmas goodies. Book or pre-order on their website.

Spirits of Jervis Bay: The festival of all things distilled is coming to Huskisson next month, 23 November from midday, $20+bf. Held in White Sands Park on the shores of Jervis Bay, The Spirits of Jervis Bay will showcase handcrafted spirits from our region’s distilleries including whiskies, vodkas, rums, and gins.
