There’s always something new to discover here in our little slice of paradise. My hot pick for this weekend is for green thumbs. Take a drive out to the spectacular native botanic gardens at Shoalhaven Heads for their annual plant sale. You won’t be disappointed.

Market Days

FRESH FOOD THURSDAYS: Choose from Berry Farmers Markets in the Berry showgrounds, 2-5pm or Nowra CBD Fresh Food Markets in Jellybean Park, 2-6pm, or why not patronise both?

TOMERONG SATURDAY: This weekend is the boutique markets in Tomerong School of Arts on Saturday 20 January, 8-1.30pm.

Cross the road to Maker and Baker for a selection of artisan products made and baked with love in Jervis Bay. Every Saturday 9.30-2pm.

Pop-up Fashion

LOCAL DESIGNERS: Four fresh fashion designers are hosting a pop-up shop in Huskisson till late Feb, at 15 Hawke Street Huskisson, next to the Sandbar restaurant. Choose from Frank Rae’s elegantly simple garments, Ochre Lane swimwear in contemporary ribbed towelling, and small-batch fashion and shoes from Balm Wears and The Bali Tailor. The simple, spacious fitout is perfect for browsing. Keep an eye on Frank Rae’s Facebook page for updates on the pop-up.

Citizen Science

COAST SNAP: Make a contribution to the monitoring of our coastlines, with this citizen science project, CoastSnap. Your photos help to track changes to coastlines around the world, with more than 50,000 images collected so far. Read about the project and how you can participate.

FEEL GOOD: Playing on the deck at Serotonin on Currambene across the weekend, starting Friday 19 January at 5pm with Gaby Bonello then Saturday 20 January from 5pm with duo Lavender Wine, both perfect accompaniments to the bar’s summer cocktails and vegetarian menu. Bookings recommended.

SUNDAY SESSIONS: Always a reliably smooth exit for the weekend, the Taproom is hosting acoustic duo The Castaways this Sunday 21 January from 4-7pm. The perfect blend of pop, folk, country and blues covers.

ALL WEEKEND: Flamin Galah has another wonderful weekend line-up of musical acts, starting with DJ Zanin spinning from 5.30 on Friday 19 January, followed by the jazz soul funk of 5-piece band All the Fuss from 4.30pm Saturday 20 January and wrapping up on Sunday 21 January with Shaun Baxter winding down your weekend from 1pm. While you’re there try the popular, award-winning Husky Weiss Australian red plum sour beer.

ROCK CLASSICS: Dirty Byrd band is entertaining at the Vincentia Country Club, Saturday 20 January from 8pm.

Weeknights for Foodies

TACO TUESDAYS: Albert N Miso’s pop-up Taco Tuesday is on for two more Tuesdays, something for meat eaters, pescatarians and vegetarians on offer. Burton Street shopping village, Vincentia, from 4pm till sold out.

BURRA BURGERS: Wednesday nights are Burra Burger nights at The Common South Coast, from 5-8pm, including kids option. Bookings can now be made by texting your preferences to 0416048815.

Community

FRIENDSHIP PROGRAM: Find out how to help older members of our communities stay connected at a special pop-up session hosted by the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra at Sussex Inlet Neighbourhood Centre, 10.30am Friday 19 January. This free event will cover a friendship program and social groups along with care finder and help at home.

NATIVE PLANT SALE: The annual plant sale at Shoalhaven Heads Native Botanic Gardens is on this Sunday 21 January 8-2pm. Buy up bush tucker plants, ferns, grasses, shrubs and even a few trees, as well as some bonsais and rare plants. All funds are funnelled back into the running of the gardens. Cash or credit cards accepted, plus a sausage sizzle and hot drinks to keep you going. Bring a bag or box to protect your car. 9 Celia Parade Shoalhaven Heads.

MONSTER BOOK SALE: The Nowra Town Band annual Monster Book Sale is on this weekend, Saturday 20 January 9-4 and Sunday 21 January 9-2, cash only please. If you want to donate books, you can drop them off this Thursday and Friday 9-3. Funds support brass music in the Shoalhaven. Did you know, Nowra Town Band is the longest continually performing band in Australia! Children’s books, novels, biographies, non-fiction, DVDs, CDs from 50 cents. Definitely worth a drop-in. 174 Kinghorn Street Nowra.

Power up your fitness

ZUMBA IN HUSKY: The perfect combo of dance and fitness – no grapevine in sight. Pay $15 to your instructor, ‘Move with Fio’ from Thursday 18 January starting 6pm, and every Thursday for 10 weeks.

PILATES IN THE PARK: Build your stamina in Voyager Park, Huskisson this coming Wednesday 23 January from 8am, make sure you check the Facebook page in case of inclement weather. Hosted by the Bay & Basin Leisure Centre, the Pilates in the Park class is free but bookings are highly recommended by calling (02) 4406 2022.

BOOTCAMP IN THE PARK: If you like your exercise a bit harder, try the free Bootcamp in Voyager Park on Thursday 24 January from 6.30am, make sure you check the Facebook page in case of inclement weather. Hosted by the Bay & Basin Leisure Centre, the class is free but bookings are highly recommended by calling (02) 4406 2022.
