Did you see footage of the juvenile White shark in Lake Conjola? Apparently this 2-metre youngster was unable to get back out to sea when the lake entrance became too shallow, and Fisheries was patrolling the area to help the little guy back out again.
Here’s what else is happening around Jervis Bay and the south coast.
Late winter dining
The Sushi Martini Club @ Jervis Bay Coffee Club is hosting a Kidzfix Car Rally Raffles & Acoustic Night with The Howlers this Friday from 5pm, down the walkway from the lolly shop on Owen Street Husky. Enjoy the acoustic vibes from this local band, tuck into some edible art with sushi made to order by chef Egi, while supporting a great cause. You may even discover me (Narrell) in the kitchen under the guidance of Egi prepping your meals and hand making one of the biggest sellers, house-made Karaage chicken bao buns.
Argentinian Night is here. Limited tickets are still available for the long-awaited Argentinian BBQ night, a collaboration with Old Salt and Bud’s Tavern, this coming Tuesday 27 August at 6pm, from $80pp. This spicy night of woodfired meat, cocktails and music was rescheduled from earlier this year to ensure the authentic cooking style of chef Terry from Old Salt could be achieved at the Owen Street tavern. We will see you there!
Speaking of Old Salt Distillery, they will be open 30 and 31 August for your dining pleasure, cooking their legendary woodfire steaks and pouring their signature drinks at the South Nowra location. No bookings required, just check in at the bar on arrival. Sample one of their refreshing seltzers, like the mandarin and yuzu, or what about a cocktail made with their unique Marionberry liqueur. These berries, originally a hybrid created in Oregon USA, are grown especially for Old Salt at a boutique berry farm in NSW.
Markets this weekend
There’s a special Artisans Market at Husky Community Centre Sunday 25 August 10-3, featuring more than 20 stalls of handmade items, art and crafts, demonstrations, some participatory elements like collage and mini artists books, live music from local harpists and plenty of gifts for dad, especially in the mini art gallery in the annexe, featuring a wide variety of paintings, drawings and abstract collage at affordable prices.
Thursday is farmers market day! Support local growers, producers and makers at two weekly markets dedicated to a community of fresh, healthy and delicious food. This should be your weekly stock up, at the Berry Farmers Market in the Bowlo and the Nowra Fresh Food Market at Harry Sawkins Park, both 2-5pm.
Saturday 24 August is the Nowra Showground market day, 8-1.30pm, enter via Junction Street. Our favourite donut peeps will be there.
Sunday 25 August is the Berry Village market day, 10-2pm at Berry Bowlo. Kieltys Irish sauces will be there, buy a three-pack for a perfect dad’s day gift.
Sunday Sessions
Unwind in style at our favourite live music options around the south coast. Jervis Bay Brewing Co, in the Huskisson industrial zone, provides the perfect late afternoon vibes from Will Chittick who starts his set at 3pm. At Bannisters in Mollymook, The Rooftop East bar is the place for tunes and a tipple as the sun sinks, between 5pm and 8pm, this Sunday with Gaby Bonello.
Plan Ahead
The inaugural Bloomfield Festival of music and arts is coming up on 30 August – 1 September, within the natural surrounds of Coolendel Camp in Buangla. Final release tickets are just under $270 and glamping tents for 2 or 4 people are still available. Bands will include indie rock and folk, jazz and punk. Aptly coined ‘the first festival of spring’, Bloomfield celebrates the return of longer days and warmer weather through live music, interactive workshops and global cuisine.
