Indulge at Gloss, Huskisson’s newest nail and makeup studio by Emily Chandler of By Jane Studios. Enjoy a luxurious pedicure with a glass of bubbles and sensational Jervis Bay water views. Perfect for individual pampering or group bookings and makeovers!

Is there anything more luxuriously relaxing than a foot massage during a pedicure?
At Gloss in Huskisson, Emily Chandler and her team have managed to take it up another notch. The new studio, located upstairs from 5 Little Pigs café on Owen Street Huskisson, is a bright and fresh space with sweeping views of the Bay where individuals or groups can book in for a pamper of hands, feet or a makeup session.
Your intrepid writers from JBW Magazine spent an afternoon at Gloss sampling the nail care services and caught up with Emily afterwards to learn more about her vision for Gloss and for By Jane, her brows and skincare studio located at the other end of the corridor from Gloss.
Beauty is a Feeling
For Emily, after 20 years in the beauty sector it was time to create her own business and four years ago she did just that with By Jane. More than anything, she focused on the feeling her clients would have from a treatment – more than the products or the process, she wanted people to leave with a feeling of being cared for.
“I have always had the core value that beauty isn’t a treatment, it’s a feeling,” she says. “I think we all want to be cared for, we all want to be listened to and having my own business allowed me to create it from the ground up and customise all of our services to bring that to our clients.”
Part of creating a unique feeling lies in the training that Emily provides for her team.
“One of the biggest reasons I created these businesses, and I instil this in my staff, is that people, men and women, when they come to us they can be very vulnerable. I make sure when training staff that everyone who walks through the door is greeted with warmth, it’s a safe and welcoming environment where we make sure people are left feeling confident about who they are.
“I don’t want anyone to ever feel like they have to change themselves through beauty, we are supporting who you are.”
The treatment rooms at By Jane are comfortable, private and safe to encourage that feeling in the clients, while up at Gloss, the atmosphere is more social and caters easily for groups up to five people.
Putting on the Gloss
In the new studio, nail treatments and makeovers are provided with a glass of bubbles (alcoholic or non) and friendly chatter among friends – or groups such as hens’ parties – with the focus again being on the feeling of care and an ethos of “clean beauty”.
The staff, Alex and Charlie create a relaxed vibe and instil quiet confidence in the clients. The nail care services are “dry” treatments – there are no foot spas here – and the feeling is somewhere between a podiatrist and a high-end nail salon. Rough skin is smoothed, cuticles are cleaned up and nourished, and a small selection of colours are on offer which makes the choice a short pleasure.
The products, including Pure Fiji and Youngblood makeup, are carefully chosen to support the clean ethos and the sensory experience.
Sampling Mum’s Cosmetics
Emily was attracted to the beauty industry from a young age, before she was old enough to know it was an industry, or consider it a career, she was already developing her personal ethos around beauty.
“I used to sneak into my mother’s bathroom, she had very expensive taste for lovely cosmetics. I would use them meticulously and put them back meticulously so she wouldn’t know.
“I remember the products smelled a certain way and felt a certain way and I always remember thinking it wasn’t about just putting it on, it was about how it felt when it went on.”
That feeling has stayed with Emily since then and has driven the way she has created her own studios.
“We aren’t just putting a cream on someone or doing a manicure, we are providing a sensory experience,” she says.
By Jane the Brand
Emily says she didn’t want to be the hero in the brand, so she used her middle name for By Jane. “Jane is my alter ego, I suppose,” she admits.
Her alter ego has so far also been responsible for creating and launching two brow products under the By Jane brand, and there are more to come.
Both products are for brow setting with one giving a laminated look and the other a clear mascara style of product that can also be used on flyaway hair.
Location Location
Emily says the two studios, in the heart of Huskisson with undoubtedly some of the best views in the Bay, were on her wishlist of locations when she started planning her business.
“It’s such a beautiful place to work every day,” she says.
“There is nothing better than having a really meticulous pedicure, one that makes you feel pampered, smooth and cared for. And who doesn’t want to sit there feeling indulgent, sipping champagne overlooking the ocean? It’s a gift with purchase, I say.”
