New Year’s Eve Around the Globe
New Year’s Eve has been celebrated for thousands of years, perhaps starting in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 2000 BCE with the spring festival Akitu. The Romans (think, Julius Caesar) in 46 BCE honoured Janus, the two-faced god of beginnings.
While Jervis Bay prepares to count down, here are some traditions from around the globe.
In Spain, it is traditional to eat 12 grapes, one for each midnight chime, bringing luck for every month, often toasted with glasses of sparkling cava.
In Denmark, people jump off chairs at midnight, symbolically leaping into the new year and leaving worries behind. They also celebrate with the sound of smashing plates. All year, locals collect unused and unwanted crockery to prepare for this annual tradition.
In the Philippines, circular shapes are everywhere: polka-dot clothes, round fruits, and coins tossed for prosperity, while sticky rice treats called kakanin are believed to bring good fortune and family unity.
In Naples, Italy and Johannesburg, South Africa, old items are traditionally thrown out windows to start fresh, though today people often discard soft objects to keep things safe.
SPECIAL NOTE
Pet owners near these event locations are encouraged to consider their pets’ safety and needs, and everyone is asked to be extra mindful of local wildlife.
