The Artful Garden at Sanctuary Point Garden Centre
Since 2008, Kathy and Greg at Sanctuary Point Garden Centre have been a wealth of knowledge and advice for all the gardeners in our community. Their corner-block on Macleans Point Road is filled with inspiration. Kathy shares some ideas for Christmas gifts for everyone.
Garden Art: We love the metal dragonfly stakes and hanging humming birds, which will add a subtle layer of pizzazz to any garden big or small.
Functional Features: Opt for a citronella candle and decorative holder, perfect for al fresco evenings in mozzie season. Or what about a weather vane or rain gauge?
Living Gifts: Happy healthy plants of all kinds are available, including Australian natives and lush indoor plants.
Landscape Immersion at Schutz in Tomerong
Bek Scott – the brains behind the sensory garden and family-friendly picnic lawn at Schutz Landscape & Garden in Tomerong – is super-excited to be starting a “crop swap” event next Saturday 14 December in their family picnic area, from 8am-10am. Simply bring any excess produce from your own garden and lay them out for others to take – it’s a great way to reduce food waste and add variety to your veggies, totally free!
When it comes to your Christmas list, you are spoilt for choice! Bek recommends some decorative plant options.
Terrariums and Kokedama Balls: Tiny gardens in glass vessels or the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball are both low-maintenance living gifts that can be hung in a window or sat on a sill and misted with a spray bottle.
Tools: Schutz has a range of garden tools for all tasks and price points, from simple hand tools to finely crafted sets.
Hamper Comp: Drawn on 23 December, every purchase in December receives an entry into a prize draw for a $250 hamper.
Native nirvana at Wirrin Wirra Nursery in Tomerong
Tucked away on a prolific bush block is the native plant specialist, Wirrin Wirra Nursery that’s just bursting with exciting cultivars (like the blue kangaroo paw we recently bought for a gift) and bush tucker – I love walking through my own garden for fresh indigenous edibles as a garnish for a cocktail on a hot summer’s day, or to make herbal tea. For locals, this is the place to visit for South Coast native species to landscape your place with confidence.
Bush foods: give the gift of taste to your loved ones this season. Try native finger limes, edible lilly pilly berries or native herbs like mint and thyme.
Grasses: native grasses make hardy and sculptural additions to any garden and many can be grown in a pot for small gardens or balconies.
At the Markets: Wirrin Wirra can be found at one of the many markets up and down the South Coast this summer.
