Some great dining and entertainment ideas this weekend, with a special roast duck on the menu at AK Dragon Malaysian Restaurant in Huskisson, smoky flavours at Old Salt Distillery in South Nowra, and a regatta competition at Vincentia Sailing Club alongside Bands on the Bay pop-up bar and food trucks.

With all our wet weather out there, it’s been perfect especially for ducks.
Fitting then, that there are plenty to be found at AK Dragon Restaurant in Huskisson, where Chef Alex has just added a new Malaysian special roast duck to the menu (until sold out).
Malaysian duck dry rubbed and cooked in a wok is an experience worth chasing. When it’s dry-seasoned and wok-roasted you get that irresistible fusion of rendered fat, smoky char and toasty spice that hits all your senses like a Penang night market.
Marinated overnight in a blend of Chef Alex’s own Malaysian spices including whole cinnamon and house-made five spice, the ducks are slow-roasted in a wok for 90 minutes until the skin is golden and the meat is deeply flavoured and mouthwateringly tender.
There’s the choice of two house-made sauces – sweet plum lifted with vinegar and ginger or Mongolian, rich and savoury with a gentle hit of chilli. Either way this is a dish that leaves your taste buds satisfied. Not sure what to drink with it? Try the Arrogant Frog Pinot Noir, light fruity, and just spicy enough.
Duck is available half serve for $25.80 or whole serve $52.80.
Last Mud Crabs for the Season
With their season just about to end, AK Dragon has received 10 large mud crabs in time for the long weekend, available from tonight until sold out.
These crabs are full of flavour, the kind of dish that invites you to roll up your sleeves and dive in.
Still priced under $100 each comes with your choice of sauce: Ginger & Shallot, Creamy Garlic, or the slow-cooked XO that regulars rave about. Wash these down with a glass of Lager fresh off the tap from our local Jervis Bay Brewing Co.
With woks sizzling and aroma of spices singing through the restaurant, it’s a feast for all the senses!
Duck special is available now for lunch and dinner. The crabs are first in, best dressed. Call ahead to pre-order especially if you’re not keen on missing out.
Pull up a Chair – Any Chair
The spirits are flowing and where there’s smoke there’s flavour!
On Saturday 26 April, Old Salt Distillery swings open its doors from 12pm to 9pm, ready to welcome locals and wanderers alike. The food is legendary here on the south coast, cooked over the woodfire with plenty of options on the menu.
Settle into a chair, for family style dining among the mis-matched furniture, that’s just how owners Terry and Michelle like it. Soak up the easy going distillery bar vibe where everything is made on site, which is as much a part of the experience as the menu itself. No bookings required, just walk up to the bar, say hi, and let the spirits and food unfold.
Just bring your appetite and your curiosity to Old Salt Distillery in South Nowra, a short 20-minute drive from Jervis Bay.
Vincentia Sailing Club’s Jervis Bay Classic
The bright colours sails in the annual Jervis Bay Classic regatta will be streaking across the Bay this weekend, as the competitors head out from the Vincentia Sailing Club in a variety of races, including the long distance race known as the Round the Bay Rally.

It’s also a weekend of Bands on the Bay, a pop-up at the Sailing Club hosted by Jervis Bay Brewing Co, bringing together great music, food trucks and a community vibe. This weekend, the food trucks are open 12-7pm, with Nani’s Food Truck dishing up delicious Indonesian cuisine Saturday and Sunday. Saturday’s music comes from Benji & The Saltwater Sound System and Sunday it’s the Bong Bong All Stars.
Paddy Butler from Vincentia Sailing Club tells us: The Jervis Bay Classic is the Vincentia Sailing Club’s annual sailing regatta, open to any off-the-beach sailing craft. In the past, it’s been known as the ‘Southerly Buster Regatta’, when it has been held closer to winter; however, with a hiatus on an annual regatta for many, many years, 2024 saw the reintroduction of the JB Classic over the Anzac long weekend. With Anzac Day landing on a Friday this year, the VSC saw the opportunity to turn the event into a three day regatta.
Friday is VSC’s Round the Bay Rally, a long distance sail boat race around the cardinal marks around Jervis Bay. For locals, this is something different that takes us to the less explored corners of the Bay. And for visitors, it’s an awesome way to showcase the stunning area in which we live.
Saturday & Sunday: Short course racing around set marks, right in front of the VSC clubhouse and the Jervis Bay Brewing Co. pop-up bar.
As of Wednesday evening, over 40 catamarans, both local and from afar (Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle), are set to hit the waters of Jervis Bay for three days of action packed racing.
Jervis Bay provides a natural arena for spectators, both from on shore or out on the water. Whether you’re sitting on the grandstand at the VSC clubhouse enjoying a beer from JBBC at Plantation Point, or walking along white sands walk, from Huskisson to Moona Creek, or from Holden Street Boat ramp to Orion, you’ll be able to view the racing and all the colourful sails filling up the horizon.
A Note from Narrell
I am taking a little time away from the keyboard and heading off on a global culinary adventure.
