Friday 8 November: Running right after the excitement of last weekend’s triathlon, we’re diving straight into The Bay Games this weekend! As we all know, good nutrition can make a real difference in athletic performance.

To help you fuel up, we’ve put together recommendations from local cafes in Huskisson and Vincentia. These spots offer pre- and post-game bites packed with whole grain carbs, lean protein and healthy fats to keep you energised and ready for action.

Husky Bowl at Tuna Tail

Let’s start at one of the healthiest spots to eat, Tuna Tail on Currambene Street Huskisson. Owner Luke Thwaites recommends the Husky Bowl, because he’s landed a fantastic kingfish sourced through Pat, who is one of the commercial fishermen from Greenwell Point. Luke told Jervis Bay Weekend that Pat line catches and dispatches their fish in a specific way that maximises the quality. Kingfish are rich in protein, selenuim and many essential nutrients. Tuna Tail is also serving up some delicious yellowfin in their poke bowls this week.

For a great quality carb infusion, try their Acai Bowl, packed full of whole grain carbs with their house granola and fresh fruits, the bananas at the moment have been super sweet.

House-Made Carbs at Pasta Buoy

Choose from 10 dishes at Pasta Buoy including, alongside the finest-quality house-made pasta, their garlic buttery sourdough cob, heirloom tomatoes with fresh burrata, basil oil and pangrattato aka “crispy garlicky breadcrumbs”, or their generous portion of Arancini Alla Norma, a local favourite featuring chargrilled eggplant, creamy ricotta and a paprika aioli.

Barra on Burton Street

Charlie Brown, owner of The Local at the Burton Street shopping village in Vincentia has recommended their barramundi and white bean salad, or the sunrise salad with black beans and a choice of protein toppers including poached egg, pulled lamb, chicken or haloumi. The black beans are complemented with a little corn and tomato salsa, smokey sweet potato, crispy kale and herbs for a flavour-packed meal. The Local also has daily grab n go salads, granola and chia pots, and reliably fantastic coffee.
