Pool deck is a standout in this new family sized beach house in Husky

New on the holiday house market is Thalassa in Huskisson, once a humble cottage that has undergone a tasteful transformation into an idyllic family getaway. Complete with swimming pool, this 3-bedroom house is in a convenient yet secluded bushland setting only metres from the main strip of Huskisson.

I love that Husky has (mostly) retained its low-key, low-rise, spacious coastal feel, unlike so many popular seaside locations that feel more Gold Coast than fishing village. This house has that classic sleepy seaside village feel about it, the renovations and extensions have been well finished but are not ostentatious, and the house sits well within the surrounding bushland.

The back deck is truly the star of this house.

It’s wide, deep, shaded and well furnished with everything you need – it’s got dining, lounging and cooking and even an overhead fan, though in this location the sea breeze is usually pretty reliable.

The view across the pool and into the bushland beyond is peaceful and serene, with a southern aspect perfect for morning coffee and bird watching. Actually, it’s perfect for an evening wine and grazing board too, and it has a clear view of the pool for supervising the kids in comfort. (There is a shower in the outside laundry to rinse off after a dip or walk on the beach.)

The kitchen-dining area at the rear of the house is light and spacious, with high ceilings and loads of glass doors and windows that invite the sunshine in. There’s an all-important coffee machine and a very large fridge, which is essential for stocking up in a house this size. The supermarkets are an easy drive away, but once you settle into Thalassa the last thing you’ll want to do is break the spell by going on a grocery shop.

The indoor dining table might be a tight squeeze for six, but the table on the deck is plenty big enough and right next to the bbq. Did I mention the deck is fantastic? Seriously, I would spend 90% of my day out here.

You can’t beat the location for a house this size. At the opposite end of Owen Street from the Husky Pub, Thalassa is tucked in behind the sports fields, with a strip of bushland right across the road and sparse neighbours. The main shopping and café strip of Husky is an easy stroll, as is the movie theatre, the maritime museum and the markets in the sports fields which are on the second Sunday of the month.

The nearest beaches are up the ‘other’ end of the street, Shark Net and Huskisson Beaches, both under 1km flat walk through the shopping strip and across the park.

You’re spoiled for restaurants and cafes in close walking distance, including some great cocktail options (since you’re walking!).
