Indoor and Outdoor Adventures in Jervis Bay this week

Looks like a few short bursts of wet weather this coming week so check the radar on BoM and plan some indoor adventures. We have a few ideas. Plus some outdoor ideas. And some great things to plan ahead.

Autumn Flicks, Concerts, and Art Classes

ON THE ROCK If you can’t find a dry wall, watch one instead at the Reel Rock 18 rock climbing film festival, this Sunday 24 March at Husky Pictures. Channel your Urban Spaceman (14, Point Perp) and travel to some exotic locales such as Peru, Japan and the Ukraine. Presented by Indoor Climb South Coast, tickets $15-60.

SHORT AND SWEET It’s also Flickerfest time, the Aussie short film festival that brings together the cream of more than 3,200 entries. Friday night’s selection includes shorts from Ireland, France, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and more, while the Saturday night program is Aussie all the way. Each night from 7pm at Husky Pictures, tickets $15-30.

CHAMBER MUSIC Head to Berry on Sunday afternoon for an intimate concert by Steel City Strings with an intense theme, Identity: Beauty out of Darkness. This concert features gorgeous and inspirational works by composers who have overcome huge life challenges to create emotionally charged music. In the Berry School of Arts on 24 March from 2pm, tickets $15-55.

STILL LIFE Try your hand at painting a still life onto fabric – such as gingham or check – adding new dimension to your work. Local artist Nicci Bedson will guide you through painting on a range of alternative surfaces. The workshop pays homage to the ordinary in the extraordinary role simple objects play in our lives. At Shoalhaven Regional Art Gallery this Saturday 23 March from 10am. Tickets $45 +bf.

OYSTER REEF Bidhiinja: restoring our oyster reefs is a new exhibition developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum in collaboration with NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI). Bidhiinja tells the forgotten history of oyster reefs in New South Wales and the work underway to restore these important ecosystems. At Ulladulla Library till 2 May, free entry + all-ages drawing competition.

Breathe, Wander, Enjoy Outdoors

If you want to go outdoors instead, there’s always a bunch of things to choose from. Picking which one is the challenge.

CULTURE ON COUNTRY Join the First Nations custodians from Gadhungal Marring for a cultural walk in the bush behind the homestead at Bundanon. Your guides will share ancient Australian culture such as identifying materials for making tools and canoes, bush tucker and bush medicine, while bathing the fresh outdoor air. Tickets for this Saturday 24 March from 10am are still available, or choose another date from the next few months, till June. Tickets $28/35.

CLEAN UP There is another Jervis Bay beach clean up happening tomorrow, Thursday 21 March with the Sea Shepherd, starting at Moona Moona playground from 2pm. Let them know you’re coming, and see what they suggest to wear and bring with you.

CLASSIC CARS If wandering around well-maintained shiny old cars is appealing, there’s a Classic Show and Shine on this Saturday in Sussex Inlet. Register to show off your own vehicle for only $10 or simply enjoy the display of 100 cars on the lawns outside the bowling club.

For Foodies

PAELLA The team at Schutz Landscape & Garden Supplies continue to add fun community activities at their Tomerong site, including a monthly Friday Sunset Session with yummy food and live music on the lawns near the big red bus. This Friday from 6-9pm it’s Spanish paella (vegetarian and GF options available), cooked in the giant pan in the great outdoors. Seating available or bring a picnic rug – the weather looks fine. FARMERS MARKETS Thursdays, in Nowra at Harry Sawkins Park 2-6pm, the Nowra Fresh Food Markets includes fresh organic produce, flowers, plants, food trucks and entertainment.

And in Berry, the Farmer’s Market at Berry Bowlo from 2-5pm, farm-fresh produce, eggs, meat, flowers, skin care, food trucks and more.

DIPSY DELIGHTS Vincentia eatery Albert N Miso is celebrating national chips & dips day this Saturday 23 March from 11am through lunch, with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern style house made dips, crispy lavosh and crudités, and a glass of sparkling Prosecco.

NOWRA This Saturday 23 March the Nowra Showgrounds Markets are on 8-1.30pm, plenty of great local stalls, a family friendly café and donuts.

BERRY The Berry Village Market is on Sunday 24 March at the Berry Bowlo 10-3pm. Stalls include homewares, art, candles, clothing, food and there will be live music.

JERVIS BAY BREWING CO Singer-songwriter Jeremy Butterworth will fill your afternoon with joyous music and soulful melodies, from 3pm in the Husky industrial zone.

ROOFTOP The Castaways – a South Coast favourite – is providing the sunset sounds at Mollymook’s Rooftop at Bannister’s Pavilion, from 5pm.

AT THE ALTAR Annaliese Szota brings her indie-pop sounds to the Altar Bar in Milton, 2-5pm. Make a booking on their website or find out about food, music and other specials on their socials.

Live music faves – a couple of mentions

TALL SHAUN Huskisson’s Martini Club will be smokin this Friday night with the bluesy husky depth of Tall Shaun, perfect with a martini, shaken of course. From 5.30pm at the Jervis Bay Coffee Co & Tapas Del Mar – down the end of the walkway past the lolly shop on Owen St.

DJ SARAH HOLDER Spinning the decks at Flamin Galah from 5.30pm Friday 22 March, Sarah Holder knows how to make her day job – and yours – a distant memory. Groove along in the Galah beer garden, the weather should hold out, in the Husky industrial zone.

Citizen Science

GLIDER SIGHTINGS While sections of the highway between Nowra and Ulladulla are undergoing upgrades, Transport for NSW has appointed an ecologist to assist with, among other things, gathering information on the endangered Greater Glider.

Construction sites

BEACH ACCESS Shark Net Beach at Huskisson is getting an upgraded pedestrian access ramp to the beach, with Shoalhaven City Council starting work there from today, 20 March, weather permitting. The works will improve access down to the beach and help prevent erosion.

NIGHT WORKS The flyover at the top of Jervis Bay Road and the Princes Highway will be the site of some night works and some 40km/h zones over the next few months, as work continues. Please drive safely especially around the workers along the roadsides, and look after each other – allow extra travel time too.

Plan ahead

Our resident Jervis Bay astrophysicist will be part of a special winter weekend Riverscape at Bundanon this July, which also includes artmaking from the land, and biodiversity stories from an expert., as well as delicious dining and museum entry. Book now for this special weekend along the banks of the Shoalhaven River, 13-14 July, from $900.

Paperbark Camp 25th anniversary Bush Banquet tickets are on sale now, for Saturday 27 April, we will be sharing some of the plans for this celebration with you in a story next week, but it promises to be a night to remember.
