Winter Solstice is almost upon us – technically the shortest day of the year will be on Friday 21 June – and the celebrations are starting this weekend with a dress up party in Huskisson.

SINK HOLE Firstly, a significant bit of local news. A natural disaster has been declared for the Shoalhaven following 6-7 June storms. Would you believe this is the 15th natural disaster to be declared in our region in the past four years!

The damage to our roads is obvious, and will be long-lasting with the sink hole on The Wool Road possibly taking 10 months to repair. There’s a special sink hole update page where you can check in with the latest developments. If you are heading into the area for holidays, make sure you check Live Traffic for real time info on conditions.

Sports fields, markets, bowls and other community amenities and events are all affected so please check for specific updates on relevant social channels. Shoalhaven Council has some other recovery initiatives including free tipping for flood-related waste – see the Council’s website and Facebook page for all the info.

SATURDAY SOLSTICE It’s time to dress up – preferably warmly – for this year’s Winter Solstice Festival at Jervis Bay Brewing Co on Saturday 15 June from 1pm. The magic of winter solstice will come alive at the brew-pub in the Huskisson industrial zone, which will turn into a colourful whirl of pagan and Druid-themed costumes, live music including drumming, folk and world fusion, and fire twirling and circus play, as the sun sinks below the horizon. There will also be face painting and prizes for the best dressed.

CAR SHOW IS ON! Tiara’s Bike and Car Show will hopefully finally go on! After a couple of cancellations with our deluge of rain, fingers crossed the weather is in favour for this fun family event this Sunday 12 June from 9am, showcasing cars and bikes. You can enter your vehicles by dropping the organiser a message through their links, entry costs $25 per vehicle.

There will be live music, raffles, trophies and prizes for vehicle categories. Come down to Huskisson Sports Club and help raise money for the Cancer Council.

$10K TARGET FOR KIDS Jervis Bay Coffee Co on Owen Street Huskisson have partnered with @kidzfixfoundation to raise money starting this Friday 14 June, launching an amazing campaign, “10 weeks to 10K”. There will be raffles, a weekly pick-a-box jackpot and more. If you DM “I ❤️ KIDZFIX” you will receive a complimentary drink. We love the creative ways our community helps to raise funds for sick kids, and we are right behind you!

BECOME A COUNCILLOR Join our local council for a free information session about how to become a councillor in the Shoalhaven City local area. Learn about the roles and responsibilities involved, and how to put your hand up for the job, This Thursday 13 June at council chambers from 4pm.

CINEMATIC CONCERT Reel Music is Steel City Strings’ performance of cinema classics – you will know them well but experience them in a totally different way under the bows of our own South Coast string ensemble. At Berry School of Arts this Sunday 2pm, $55.

MOVE WITH THE SOLSTICE Dance Tribe South Coast is hosting a Winter Solstice Conscious Dance and Sound Healing at Tomerong Hall on Thursday 20 June from 7pm. Move your body through the elements before bathing in vibrations from a sound bath, $25.

WALK ON COUNTRY First Nations cultural custodians, Gadhungal Marring will share stories and connections to country in a two-hour tour around the Jervis Bay Maritime Museum. Named after the late Laddie Timbery, grandfather of your host Raymond Timbery, the morning experience on Saturday 6 July, will draw on the legacy he created for Huskisson and beyond. BUSH TUCKER WALK A little further south, First Nations cultural custodians Bungalin are hosting a tour around the Narrawallee Inlet, including a 3km walk and bush food morning tea. Your guide Felix Salmon is a Budawang Yuin educator who will share local history and identify culturally significant plants used for food, medicine and survival. Saturday 13 July from 10am, during NAIDOC Week, $90/$30.

ARTS AND CRAFTS WORKSHOPS Sign up for a two-day arts and crafts workshop coming up this August from Arts Muster, on sale now, classes are small so buy your tickets soon to avoid disappointment. There is a great variety of classes being held on 24-25 August, the perfect way to say farewell to winter and make something creative.
