Wholefoods Canteen, fresh cafes in Vincentia

Bunya Wholefoods in the Burton Street village shopping centre in Vincentia now has a chef-run Canteen from 7.30am six days a week (closed Sundays and New Year’s Day), serving up a small menu of nourishing meals alongside their hot drinks, wraps and toasties, and raw slices and cookies – lots of vegan options here.

The Burton Street shopping village is feeling much fresher and more lively. On the café front, there’s also Phoebe’s that opened a few months ago, and new owners take over Albert n Miso from today, expect to see some wholesome additions to their fare soon.

Takeaway at Bud’s

Keen observers will know that the incredible signwriting of Clayton Campion has been slowly creeping around the corner of the bistro windows at Bud’s Tavern, subtly suggesting that takeaway would soon be available … and now it is. Order from the blackboard at the counter inside the bistro kitchen. The crew have added some outdoor seating in front too.

Bread beer?

100kg of stale Kraken bread has been transformed into a mid-strength dark lager courtesy of their neighbour, Jervis Bay Brewing Co. Both companies are passionate about sustainability and have been talking about a ‘joint venture’ for a while.

Head brewer Oisin Sweeney describes it as having toasty, bready and roasty elements, with decent bitterness and depth of flavour for a mid-strength beer. Proof of concept – you can make decent beer out of left over bread! It’s no. 8 on the menu board, available on-tap until sold out. Find out how they did it, on their socials.
