It’s our second-ever Kings Birthday long weekend, and it still sounds weird, doesn’t it? What’s not weird is the exceptional calendar of what’s on in Jervis Bay across the long weekend and beyond. Also, happy Donut Day, World Oceans Day, Seaweed Day and Winter!

OCEAN FILM FEST A very special World Oceans Day Film Festival is on at the Husky Pictures this Saturday 8 June from 3.30-8pm, starting with a welcome and smoking ceremony and featuring the documentary film, Playing With Sharks. There will be prize giveaways, short films and a sausage sizzle as well (veggie sausages available), all organised by a passionate group of locals who will donate any proceeds to the Aussie charity, Take3fortheSea, which is dedicated to ending ocean plastics. Well worth the $20 ticket plus a gold coin for a snag. Pre-purchase your tickets online.

SEAWEED DAY Our local seaweed innovators, PhycoHealth are donating to the Australian Marine Conservation Society this week up to World Oceans Day on 8 June, and for the inaugural International Seaweed Day, which was earlier this week on 4 June. Help them raise funds by donating directly via their fundraising page or buy up from their incredible range of food and skincare products knowing that 5% of your money will be donated.

WINTER LAPS Huskisson Sea Pool is now open, following the successful removal of black sludge and sediment, the clean pool is ready for a winter lap or two. The toddler pool is still closed for now. Feel the refreshing salt water cleanse the winter blues away and rest in the knowledge that the pool is inspected daily, and the water is changed weekly on Thursdays when the pool is closed for swimming.

ITALIAN DINING Did someone say “lobster risotto”? It doesn’t get any better than this, thanks to Peter & Eva, who are offering this super tasty special throughout this long weekend – the restaurant is usually closed on Sundays but will be open this Sunday 9 June from 5-9pm (closed Monday). Bookings are essential as tables fill up quickly. Sunday might be just mild enough for al fresco dining so keep your eye on the BoM radar.

TASTE OF KOREA Chef Seong, aka Mama Kim is taking us on a culinary journey, showing us how to eat Korean bbq with three meat dishes and three banchans (side dishes) and a complimentary soybean soup made with Mama Kim’s house made tofu. $45pp, bookings essential via their website.

MOVING NEWS After this weekend, Mama Kim’s is finished at its current Huskisson location within Jervis Bay Coffee Co but good news. This South Coast favourite will reappear at various locations including markets where you can buy their special sauces and house-made tofu, among other delights. Follow their socials to find out news on pop-ups, markets and other locations to come.

WINTER WARMER Try a chunky roast veggie soup with hearty pearl barley drizzled with basil oil accompanied by warm Pitta bread for only $14 at Vincentia Shopping Village’s Albert N Miso café. CHARCUTERIE DELIGHTS Martins Ridge Farm, a boutique grower of pork and beef and producer of cured meat products, is hosting some educational – and delicious – events. If you can’t make either of these events, try to catch Ian at one of the weekly farmers markets, in Berry or Nowra on Thursdays from 2pm. Charcuterie Tasting and Tutorial, Sunday 9 June 2pm, $75pp includes matched beverages. This afternoon of tutored tasting of charcuterie products includes learning about the production including the curing process.

ARTFUL TUESDAYS Sanctuary Point branch of the Shoalhaven Libraries will host an Artful Tuesday from 11am on 11 June, this month it’s knitting winter warmers. These are free craft sessions for adults, with all materials provided. Bookings are essential and can be made online.

BEER FEST The annual Beer & BBQ Festival is coming up in Huskisson on Saturday 22 June, and tickets are now available to purchase for $28pp for over 18s (under-18s free). This outdoor event is next to the Husky Pub and features a staggering array of brews, smoked meats and other tasty morsels, live music and entertainment.
