Fabulous food and drink to warm up your Winter in Jervis Bay

In FOOD & DRINK, THINGS TO DO, WHAT'S ON

Ideas to satisfy your tastebuds this weekend, next week and a few upcoming specials for you to book in advance.

FRESH FISHY NEWCOMER Welcome to the new guys on the block on Owen Street, Husky Fresh Fish & Chip Co (opposite the pub). Owner and home-grown local, Bailey told us that fish and chips are in his DNA, as his first job was at Shoalhaven Seafood East Nowra. Nowra Fresh supplies their fresh fish and meat, and when available, Jervis Bay mussels can be found in their display fridge. They will also be stocking fresh local filleted fish packs and selected meat packs from Nowra Fresh. Bailey says their specialty is the hand-cut potato scallop – an Aussie icon – we tried one of course, it’s a decent size with the lightest crispy batter.

STOUT BUNS AND BURGER SPECIALS Jervis Bay Coffee Co was serving house-made Black Bevy Session Stout burger buns and bacon & egg rolls this week. When I dropped in, I was lucky to see barista Jayden making his second batch of these beauties, they weren’t quite ready but they looked amazing and I love their colour which comes from the stout, of course.

Their new fundraising campaign, Friday KidzFix is steadily growing thanks to some of our local businesses donating gift vouchers, including BooBook on Owen right next door – if you haven’t found them already, these businesses are down along the walkway past the lolly shop on Owen Street.

This is for a great cause so come down this Friday from 5:30pm and buy a ticket to support disadvantaged kids living with a serious illness or in need of support services and medical facilities.

If you need another reason to drop in this Friday, there’s a $10 burger special and three delicious options to choose from: classic cheese burger, chicken schnitzel or vego mushroom burger all served with chips. Chat to staff and upgrade from the menu!

FIREY COLLABORATION Bud’s Tavern X Old Salt Distillery. Tickets are still available for the next collaboration between our classic 80s-style corner pub and the wood-fired grill specialists (and artisanal distillers) Old Salt, who are firing up the coals for a South American BBQ night on Tuesday 9 July at 6pm. The $80 ticket gets you a set menu of locally caught seafood, pasture-fed beef, free-range pork, and a cocktail on arrival. There will be juicy reds and natural wines, South American-inspired cocktails and spicy music too. JBW has nabbed tickets to most of these special nights so far and we highly recommend them for the superb quality of the food, the considered pairings of beverages and the generally warm and vibrant atmosphere that Bud’s is known for. Hope to see you there!

If you can’t make it that night, pick any other night for one of Bud’s three delicious lunch and dinner specials running at the moment.

Try the 250g wagyu rump with a MBS5, “meaning this super succulent, flavoruful cut of meat boasts a marble score of 5+ offering the rich taste of wagyu without the premium price of a 9+ score”. Served with parsnip puree, dutch carrots, beef-fat roasted kipfler potatoes + your choice of sauce, this is the perfect winter meal for $45.

Or there’s the 13-hour slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone lamb shank with smoked garlic mashed potatoes, carrots, parmesan cheese, green olive gremolata and rosemary jus, for $40 you couldn’t make this at home!

The third special is the Karaage chicken, Japanese-style marinated chicken thigh deep fried with mixed leaf salad, sesame and kewpie mayo, $21.

SOUTH NOWRA Dine at Old Salt Distillery this weekend. Bud’s collaborators, Old Salt Distillery are keeping “winter hours” lately at their premises in the industrial zone of South Nowra, and we are happy to give you the great news that they will be opening their bar/restaurant this weekend on Friday and Saturday – there’s no need to book, just turn up and ask for a table at the bar. The menu is predominantly cooked over a wood fire and they can cater for a wide range of dietary requirements.

BLACK FOREST PANCAKES Owen Street Huskisson fave, Salty Joe’s Café has welcomed two new local chefs who are adding new dishes and seasonal specials – this weekend, try the Black Forest pancakes with house-made marshmallows, thanks to Dylan and Morgan. This decadent homage to the world’s most popular cake is the perfect way to treat yourself this mid-winter. The new menu has plenty of GF, DF, vego and vegan available too so they’ve got you covered.

VINNIE DINNERS How does a 4-course set menu at Albert N Miso sound to you? Steve and Charlie are putting on special winter dinners on Fridays and Saturdays in July (commencing 6 & 7 July) in the Vincentia Village shopping centre, Burton Street – if you are signed up to their mailing list, you will get advance notice and be able to book a table, and details will be put on their socials too. The first weekend, for $70pp, includes a chef’s treat and dessert. Menus will change weekly, all dietary needs are catered for, and BYO is $5 corkage.
